Firstly an initial sketch was needed to create some rough working of the design. Atlas is usually shown carrying the world on his shoulders similar to the well known expression. He often stands tall and doesn't look in much stress or discomfort. After listening to the song once more and thinking about the idea of saving the world it became clear this wouldn't be an easy task. You would look beaten and tired. The sketch then took inspiration from Jesus bearing the cross and falling. The hair covering his face both meant I did not have to draw a face and that he was exhausted. The cloak covers only part of his body and the rest can be seen with muscles still shown strong and powerful but weakened. It had to look a difficult task and not like the initial idea of a superhero pose, standing all high and mighty.
After the initial sketch I used a light box to redraw and refine the design before doing the same onto some watercolour paper ready for the colour to be added.
