To start off the research for the project poster designs and artwork for films were looked into. This gave an understanding of independent design for the films. Although the artwork for the this project will be a lot smaller in scale to these designs it still made sense to look into them and gain inspiration. Design would later be simplified and made more prominent on a smaller scale.
As stated in the brief artists like Olly Moss often are either asked or decided to take it upon themselves to create artwork based on films as unique prints, posters and more. Looking at his work and others like it on MondoTees is helpful to gain an insight into the thought process behind the ideas. The design is taken straight from the films or an artists interpretation of something from the film. Olly Moss' Star-Wars designs show this quite well taking inspiration from the colours used in the films and although not directly depicting a scene do feature elements of the scene and create the outline of a character.
The posters below are based on DC comic films. Although they are not straight from the film itself they feature imagery that can be instantly connected back to it. The way they use silhouettes to create their designs without having to rely on colours is quite amazing. Any fan of the characters or films would recognise these designs straight away.

It was hard to look into new reports for film poster design or independent blu-ray box designs as it is quite niche and doesn't usually make it into much news. Instead research could be conducted looking into books such as The Independent Movie Poster book and Art of the Modern Movie Poster. These were helpful to look into and gain insight into artwork for films after their production. Quite a few of the designs don't feature pictures directly from the films or feature vector like imagery which is interesting. The independent films featured design such as this more than the mainstream films. Comparing this research to the online websites I have visited is interesting to see the diversity in design. Often colours used are based on the films and the designs feature elements taken from props, characters or scenes of the film. The images are always very striking and stand out, some seem to only make sense to the film if you have seen it.
