Type In Context, Book Design Research - OUGD504

The foiling has been produced in a way to lead the eye towards the publication with the light reflecting on the contrasting dark black background. The cut out from the corner also helps to make the book stand out from any others making it different. In summary the publication has been well thought out in it's overall design as you know exactly what to expect from it, from the title to the actual tactile design.

Within this publication another approach has been taken to show off a food book. You can see from the illustrations on the front show off what the book is about and the title also suggests this too. The foiling has been also taken on in a different way using a light white background to maybe show a more light hearted approach within the colour choices and the overall aesthetic of the book.

Now this not for a book but instead for a wine menu but it still suit the design I will be aiming for. The class really comes through to show elegance for the bar but it stays simple as not to overcomplicate matters.

Using photography on the cover is something I have considered but I don't feel will work for the publication. This book still shows class and an almost niche look about it because of the binding method, the folding and the image gives a small look into what the book maybe about.

Simple and does what it says, you look at this and feel good about the design, the image is is pleasing and the soft white text is easy on the eyes to draw you in and want to know more.

The contrast of the bright colour on the side and the dark imagery really helps balance out this cover so it is not to heavy on either one side. The designer has done this to draw you in and help your eyes relax as you look instead of having to look away at a book that is too heavy.

This is sort of opposite to the previous publication the bright white and solid black are almost a little too hard to look at but it does still catch your eye. There is too much writing that the eye doesn't quite know where to focus. Wood used on the binding is a good way to split this up but it almost just adds another layer of difficulty for the viewer.

Simple and elegant the design looks modern and subtle. The debossing of the type works really well and makes you want to touch the book, engage with it. A neutral colour on the front works with the complimentary colours of the tabs hanging out.
