Type in Context, Binding Techniques - OUGD504

The publication will reflect that of a niche luxurious design on the outside, while on the inside the pages will still have this aesthetic but the content will be juxtaposed. This mean that the binding method will also have to reflect this style to keep everything consistent within the design.

There are many different binding methods some may be considered as niche and luxurious which, is what is needed for the publication. Something that takes time, looks hand crafted or produced to a high standard and only a certain number are made, not commercially printed by the thousands.

After having a refresher session into bookbinding a few other methods were shown including the hardback pamphlet stitched book we produced. After speaking to a tutor about some of the techniques it was decided that a Hardback cover, Japanese Stab Stitch bound book would suit all the requirements of my publication; to look niche, luxurious and to juxtapose the content inside.

Japanese Stab Stitch binding can mean that the publication may not open to lay flat and the book will always want to close on itself to combat this the pages will be scored and folded and the cover will have a gap to help open on the front.
