OUGD406 - Licence to Print Money, Initial Ideas

So like I have stated in previous posts I am looking into exploring the now or the future. I looked into different ideas for both such as technological achievements, space and different countries. I looked into different currencies and considered multiple different aspects early on like the materials, colour and the design decisions. I also put down historical achievements as an option to make sure I explored all avenues.

Above are some of the ideas I had for the different themes. I sketched out some quick broad ideas.
The space theme would be very futuristic sleek and clean looking, using aspects from our solar system.
Global theme is looking into a currency for the whole world to bring all of us together sort of a universal currency that you wouldn't have to worry about the exchange rate.
Science is looking into the different scientific achievements throughout all of history but would fit a similar theme to the space idea using sleek futuristic looking design.
History is how I said before to explore all avenues. I have looked mostly into historical creations like the aqueduct and things that pushed us to the future.
The last theme was to look at tradition I didn't have a full plan but looking into different countries traditions and displaying them in some way on my note.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Final Design - Reprinted

I reprinted my design on a stock bought from the print room in university to make sure the print came out as planned. The colours came out how I wanted them and the ink doesn't rub off like the first.

OUGD406 - Licence to Print Money, Research

Above are a lot of the world's different banknotes, the first thing that stands out to me is how colourful the whole image looks. Money is known to be something that has almost taken over our lives, we're almost consumed by it people say but one of the main reasons is because it looks so attractive. The bright colours and the intricate design that is put into it how can someone ignore something that has had so much work put into the design. The note needs to be well thought out and look attractive otherwise people will refrain form using it. It is no coincidence it feels so good to hold money obviously the feeling that you can purchase something with that money is part of the feeling. What I'm saying is there's more to it if you were given a pile of goo and told you can go and purchase anything you want with that disgusting pile of goo you wouldn't be too happy holding it and would much rather you didn't have it. You don't want to part with money because it feels good and also makes people feel powerful therefore the design should reflect that.

Maybe it's because I'm british and I have been using the almost same designed notes since I was young but I don't get excited by our design. I almost forget it's colourful when talking about other notes as if they're monopoly money because they're so bright and fun. I have also been handling money for a good few years in the sense of taking it but I never get to spend it after it enters my till. I just feel the british bank note is quite boring, I said in a previous post that a lot of the current currency celebrates history but not much celebrates the now or even the future.

These notes were designed by Travis Purrington, he wanted to revamp the US Banknote. I have included this design because it celebrates recent achievements like the space landing American achievements sure but it still includes what I have been talking about banknotes currently not including. The notes again use a lot of colour and are pieces of art in their own right. I believe one of the issues in this idea is that we're making new groundbreaking achievements so often therefore the notes would feel outdated quickly. Another problem that goes alongside the last is how do you decide on what to put on the notes. You could improve this idea by releasing the notes as sets every few years or all at once as collectibles, people may argue that the notes could be easily counterfeited with many different designs out there. I would say if the security features and colours were kept the same then it shouldn't be too hard to stay on top of the security and may even be more secure as people will check more.

I have included some more designs above that I found interesting especially the bottom that looks to use some UV light feature to reveal more to the note. Hidden features within the notes would be a very interesting idea and would give them something more than just the colours to look pleasing.

OUGD406 - Licence to Print Money, People's History Museum

An exhibition at the People's History Museum in Manchester proved to be quite useful for this brief. A brief look at the history of the banknote gave some useful insight into how the notes were made and why.
The brief is to redesign and possibly reinvent the bank note. This is a hugely open brief meaning that if we can show our reasoning behind our designs we can almost anything. Looking around the museum a lot of the money and ideas behind are celebrating history, the past. I haven't yet seen much to celebrate current times or the future. I would quite like to further research this and see if there is potential for a new idea to come along.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Final Critique and Evaluation

I asked that from my initial points about the project if people thought that I had managed to stick to them.
I spoke about bringing the leaflet into the modern age like explaining how phones could be used to send out the warning signals. The modern idea was brought up again talking about how I could use a QR code to send the reader to a website to find out more. This linked into the idea of adding in something that could tell you how to get in contact with anything to give more detail. I was asked about the colour scheme I used and what made me choose the colours I did, what made me think about the choice, what was the reasoning behind it? The last point was about the front of the leaflet being a bit sparse and lacking in information. Would this really make someone pick up the leaflet or would they not have a clue about what it was about and therefore throw it out before they have a chance to look at it.

I did mean to add in more modern advancements in the design. It wasn’t because I couldn’t be bothered or forgot but more to the point that the leaflet is meant to be used in the event of a strike. This also brings me onto the point of including internet or other services to contact. Most likely phone lines and even electricity could be down so a contact system is not always the best idea in the situation. This leaflet is simply if you are stuck in your own home or business or anywhere else how would you protect and survive. The colour scheme was chosen because of the complete contrast between the colours, black and white completely compliment each other in contrast. The colours on the inside of the leaflet are to draw your eyes to the important information. This would split up the text inside not making it to heavy on the eyes and would mean you can quickly find the information you need. When asked about the front of the leaflet I explained that the information was left out because I had placed the government logo on the back people would realise the urgency. At the same time people may not understand why they are receiving the leaflet and this may scare them going against my idea to keep people calm. I could maybe include an explanation about how this is to be used in the event of an attack but that we are not expecting one to keep people at ease.

My overall opinion for my design is a good one. The leaflet is bold eye catching and relays all the important information I wanted to include. The design is simple yet attractive, you want to pick it up to find out more and because there isn’t too much information on the inside you want to engage with it. The stock is right for the design the only annoyance is that I chose the wrong paper type for printing. The weight for folding up the design works perfectly and the contrast from the outside to the inside works brilliantly to keep your attention. I think the only point that I would make is that I would maybe have to include some sort of description for the leaflet as you are almost thrown in with no idea about why you are reading the information and for a design that is meant to calm the reader it may end up scaring them receiving a guide like this with no explination. Overall I am pleased that I have met the criteria set and achieved my own goals.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Final Design

My final design features most of what I wanted to include from my initial ideas. I have kept it simple and not over complicated it. The information is quite heavy but I have only included key points and broken it up with pictograms. I set the dimensions of the whole leaflet to A4 but after being folded it fits into A5. The way the leaflet slots together uses a tab method, this is to make sure the viewer doesn't get annoyed when trying to look at it.
Paper I have said from the beginning is a huge part of the design process. I chose a 270gsm weighted white paper, this is so the front of the design could be printed perfectly clean and there would be a great contrast with the inside. The weight was chosen so that I could slot the design together at the back using the tabs. The paper I was told is not designed to be printed on so the colour is as full bleed as I would have liked and it isn't as great quality. I think I may have to try a re print the design at some point.
Overall my design has worked out pretty much how I planned and I am happy with the outcome.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Printing Practice

I practiced printing off my design on some inkjet paper before printing off the final designs. Firstly I printed upside down so had to rectify that on the back.

I had to re position the design on the front because of the tab being printed which proved difficult but I eventually figured it out and was ready to print.

I looked into 4 different stocks of paper. The one I have decided on is the one to the left, the feel is how I wanted and the weight means it will fold well. The Colouring is a bright white which will help the design stand out.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Development and Experimentation

I thought the current design used for Protect and Survive was still relevant as it included family safety and a sense of calm within it.

Colour was something I wanted to play around with, I didn't want to go too over the top but wanted the design to stand out. The blue and the orange reminded me of some sort of game which I thought looked nice but it didn't suit what I wanted to portray. When I was playing around with the typography I saw the black on white and realised that the design would work as that. The black would contrast really well and pop off the paper for the viewer to see. As for portraying information on the outside of the leaflet I thought using just the HM Government logo would be enough as people would realise the urgency. The outside of the leaflet would be mostly white therefore I thought to again have a striking impact I would make the inside white on black and add in small amounts of bright saturated colours to highlight important information.

The designs above are little icons or pictograms I plan to use to show the information inside my leaflet as to not make it too text heavy.

OUGD405 - Studio Brief 02 Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Feedback and Critique

At this moment in time I have not started the physical design of my leaflet and instead I have been researching what I could include within it.

When speaking to a group about my design decisions the majority agreed with what I had to say. I told the them about what I wanted to get out of my design like the fact I wanted to keep it calming and serious in one.
When asked about what information I would be putting inside the design I explained that I would like to include information from all 51 minutes worth of clips not just from one clip. Someone presented me with the problem of having too much information so we decided pictograms would be a great way to get around the issue as to not overcrowd the leaflet.
A lot of people did not no anything of what would happen in the event of a nuclear attack so I had to explain. This was quite good because it gave me a practice at relaying the information in a simple manner rather than a huge chunk of text.
The front of the leaflet would have to be eye catching yet simple so people would pick it up. Within the group this was a key topic. I didn't get a lot of feedback but when I was giving some it was producing me with ideas for my own design. The colour could be black and white yet still be effective as it would be very striking, I could still include small amounts of colour to make information jump out.

Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Sketches and Folding Practice

I jotted down some brief ideas about how I could design the leaflet and quickly decided on a final idea.

I wanted my design to be simple unique. The tab design means that you can slot the leaflet together meaning the information will be sealed until you need to open it. I practiced with different folding then realised the tab would be best to keep the design together and I looked into the sizing.

OUGD405 - Studio Brief 02 Public Service Leaflet Further Research

The gsm of paper I am looking to use will have to be a medium weight because I don't think a flimsy leaflet will fold well or be as eye catching. People would just throw out the whole thing if it was designed on light glossy paper because it looks the same as any other junk that's posted through the door daily. The design really has to stand out and part of the design decision is the paper stock.

  • I'm looking to use stock around 250-300gsm.
  • The design must be simple as to not over complicate the the important information inside.
  • Easy to access the information is key and legibility is also.

I want my design to be striking and eye catching. I think urgency and a level of serious is needed in the design but the viewer needs to be kept calm and reassured.

Like I said I want my design to be eye catching but simple. The designs above are just that maybe not simple in look but the idea. I need the reader to pick up their leaflet and take it out of the pile of junk left for them when they get home from work. The publication can't be a chore to read through it's essential information that one day lives may be dependant upon.
Above the designs have been cut into interesting shapes or have had them cut out. The shapes lead the eye to key information and help you understand the piece. Typography has been designed in the same way to lead the eye but the text has been kept to a minimum as to not deter the viewer from reading the information.

The fold of the leaflet is also important. This can be eye catching if some amazingly designed fold is keeping the piece together but it can also over complicate the design. I want mine to be different to normal designs you usually receive but I would also like to keep it simple so people are not frustrated. You will need easy access to the leaflet.

Colour is another key feature in the design. Colour is something we relate, it can make you feel a number of different things. This is why I would like to closely look at colour for my design as I've sad previously I want my design to be calming and serious. The designs above use a lot of colours which provide a range of emotions but I think above the designs are fun and meant to feature a lot of colour. My design shouldn't really be fun to I will have to look at more bold colours, maybe into black and white.
