KFC, Submission - OUGD603

The project was submitted to YCN on time and no awaits judging. The presentation boards are shown below and above is a shot from the physical bucket I made. Upon reflection I could have maybe shot the piece with some chicken inside to make the design pop more and give more context.

KFC, Final Designs - OUGD603

The brief specified that you were not limited to only designing for the bucket. Therefore the mockups below are to show how the design can be transferred across all KFC's packaging and advertising. The design is simple but versatile meaning it can easily work across all different platforms with minimal costs or change. Although not much is needed to change the designs of the original products it is still clear that the theme of celebration plays a huge role across all the designs.

KFC, Posters + Final Feedback - OUGD603

As the brief said you should consider all forms of advertising and packaging it made sense to make some posters and some other box designs using the confetti. The designs again were kept simple and were able to transfer across different mediums easily.

The feedback gained on these pieces as well as the final designs was helpful to make sure nothing more could be considered before submission.

People suggested that the bucket were to be printed out and photographed properly rather than using mockups. This is easier said than done, the net created for this brief looks simple but is difficult to put together as I have already attempted to print the piece. I will try again and take some shots of the piece ready for submission. The same was said for the posters and it was said to maybe add some more information to them as they currently only have Placeholder text. I stated that it was just to show the design and not to actually advertise at this stage so no body would be needed.

KFC, Development - OUGD603

Confetti idea went down well so the designs were taken slightly further, neatening up some of the shapes and making sure it looked to be radiating outward from the KFC logo. The colours used are that of KFC's own branding meaning it can consistently work across many forms of advertising and packaging. As for the bucket design the packaging should pop and be bold, it should stand out above the rest as the bucket is the king of all KFC products and the purpose of this brief.

The idea is that the black boxes can be used for KFC's hot wing range and the lighter packaging for box meals as well as the chips.

The colour modes used above are going to be similar to the final designs but often red on black and white on any other colour for the colonels head did not work for the design and often gave quite a scary look so this will be avoided.

Final Bucket Design:

The idea of turning the triangle shapes into a chicken head didn't really work with the idea of a simplistic design. The idea is there and someone may be able to create something with it but for this design it doesn't work. The scale would be too small for such a complicated little thing that wouldn't be that noticeable.

KFC, Further Research - OUGD603

I see where Pete was coming from to look into the memphis group a the design stylings and feel were quite similar to the ones I had put onto the KFC bucket. I think the colour for my own design needs to reflect KFC's branding more but could definitely work with this style.

KFC, Feedback - OUGD603

In the feedback session I received some great advice. Someone suggested making the confetti into chicken for the triangle shapes to see how this would look. Other feedback that was suggested was to print off some of the designs as well as make some mockups to make sure that the design worked for its purpose and possibly across other forms of KFC packaging/advertising. A tutor mentioned that a good bit of research would be to look into the Memphis Group.

KFC, Digital Designs - OUGD603

The designs above are some of my initial digital ideas. The plan was to stay simple but really it just looked boring and too close to some of the old designs. There were also no elements of celebration or togetherness.

The designs then took a slight turn after looking back over the research and initial sketches. The new design focused strongly on the theme of celebration using simple shapes to simulate confetti. It made it easier to start with the blank canvas and then move down slowly adding colour to the design. After using the black and white design it became clear that more colour was needed. The multicoloured design works somewhat but maybe not with KFC's branding so the black white and red design was made.

KFC, Sketches - OUGD603

Above are just some quick notes and sketches to show the development of the piece. As the project is needed to be quick most of the work will be made digitally. Initially ideas were generated showing how designs could be displayed on the box. Some notes were made in accordance to how the design could look and to create some fun themes to play around with. Such as using the recent KFC scandal when most stores ran out of chicken. The idea of using song lyrics to create designs was also thrown around

KFC, Time Plan - OUGD603

The time plan for this brief is quite basic but I do not want to spend more than 2 weeks on the project as it is not an overly complicated one. The hand in for the competition is in March so I do have a lot of time to complete it but ideally it will be done before the deadline giving me time to gain feedback and change anything that needs to be changed.

The bucket design accounts for all the prep and research for the projects. The mockups should not take long so I have only given myself a few days. The Photoshoot should account for printing as well as editing so again a few days is necessary and no more as long as nothing goes wrong. Finally the submission boards can be started as soon as the bulk of the design is over.

KFC, Research - OUGD603

In the past KFC has not really used complicated designs, usually they stick with quite simplistic shapes and the same colour combinations. This makes it a bit hard to design something new but also means there are rules to follow that could help the design process. The brief specifies using their colours but does say you can use new colours and experiment. The Colonels head is often quite large on the design as is the KFC logo so this will also need to be considered.

Keep the design simple, use minimal colours and focus around the logo itself. Something else to consider is the themes stated of togetherness and celebration. Once again these should be tackled with subtlety and not overpower the design.
