Photography Branding, Further Development - OUGD603

When taking the design further I found out Izzy prefers a navy blue look so we tried adding this to the type to make it look less harsh than the bold black. Using this colour we also tried some redesigns of old ideas and even added some new ones. Izzy is fond of nautical themed photography so I tried adding an anchor to the design but she wasn't for that idea. The TP kept her last two initials quite simple and meant the design was straight to the point.

Some designs for the postcard had been started below in preparation for the next meeting. Not much is needed to create the back of a postcard so it was more having to look at layout and how this can work in different ways.

Photography Branding, Third Meeting - OUGD603

Working with different symbols was the next step before finishing off the logo design. Izzy enjoyed the three lines together mostly but couldn't quite come to terms of how she wanted them set out. It also had to be decided how the card would be laid out on the back to show the information. At first the design showed; Izzy's name, her field of work, her contact number, email address and social media. Izzy didn't like how much information was on and decided it would be best if it were cut down. She only wanted her email address on there and nothing but but I suggested it would be better to have other means of contact.

Photography Branding, Mock-Ups - OUGD603

Below are some mockups made to show off some designs in context. At the top are some paper bags, the bags colour would match that seen on the business cards and would be able to store, postcards and business cards for clients or employers. Below that are stamps that could be used to stamp the business cards onto any material or the logo on it's own such as onto the bags.

Photography Branding, Development Research - OUGD603

As we would not be in constant contact with each other and it would be hard to meet up or show ideas often I suggested that Izzy set up a Pinterest page with some designs she enjoyed. This would help me to design using some inspiration and get an insight into the things Izzy enjoyed. Below are just some of the designs that have been used to inspire Izzy's branding. I also have a pinterest board for inspiration, mine has been getting work added to for quite a while and is not all relevant for this project but some research can be taken from it.

Photography Branding, Second Meeting - OUGD603

In our second meeting Izzy mentioned that instead of a publication showcasing her work she thinks it would be easier to maintain a set of postcards to send out to clients or potential employers. This seemed like a more economical method and would be easier to produce more often. My time plan would have to be amended as a publication would have taken a lot longer to produce than one standardised design on a set of postcards.

A lot of work had been produced leading up to this second meeting but unfortunately some had been lost due to programmes crashing and files reverting. Luckily some was saved and the others could be reproduced. This is just something that can happen and has not impacted the time plan.

Taking on board some of the comments from feedback and from Izzy herself, some designs were produced to be less business like and to use more colour. The tulip design has not yet been added in as when creating some designs Izzy seemed to quite enjoy one or two of them so the focus was put on these designs.

The three lines were taken from the three initials of Izzy's name. This was then tweaked and changed around to create some sort of icon that could be used as her brand image.

The colour was played around with as Izzy stated that she like both green and blue. She said she enjoyed block bold typefaces and didn't enjoy curves so this was taken into consideration.

To start putting some ideas into context Izzy's name was added to a business card to see if this could spark some new ideas. Different designs and shapes were played with based on Izzy's instructions of what she wanted the design to be like.

The green colour was introduced but Izzy prefered the blue so decided to stick with this. She had decided that she really enjoyed the three lines and wanted her logo or icon to use something around that design.

We had spoken about using a stamp to make the business cards and possibly the postcards. Izzy then liked the idea of using black outlines around the text which isn't usually the best in terms of design especially if she would like a simplistic clean look that she has described in the past. I have advised against the idea and hopefully this has pushed her away from something that wouldn't have fit in with her other ideas.

Photography Branding, Feedback - OUGD603

The work made for the initial ideas came with some mixed feedback. Many people liked the idea of the tulip but taken down to just the flower with no letters or the stem. As the Izzy did not like this idea it will have to be relayed back to her in the next meeting to see how she feels.

The other ideas didn't go down well and were thought to be too corporate or business like, which is no the feel Izzy was going for. Playing around with colours was mentioned to see if that can alter the final outcome.

Photography Branding, Initial Ideas - OUGD603

A few ideas came to mind when chatting with Izzy so I jotted them down to remember before taking them through to digital and to make sure they look somewhat to how I imagined. The sketches were quick and do not do the ideas justice but are mainly for reference.

Once the designs had been taken through to digital it was easy to see that some would just not work for a photographer/curator.

The idea was a bit too 'done' for the first few designs and the next few looked like they would work for a recycling agency or something to do with plumbing. It wasn't really the right look at all.

Moving on from this some designs were created around the client's name using a tulip flower to make up the middle letter and represent her name "Tulip".

Izzy was not too found of the above idea and stated it worked more for a florist than for her discipline. When showing it to others they agreed with the statement.

The ideas continued working with Izzy's name and initials but more work will have to be put in and Izzy's comment about creating something simple will have to be taken on board.

Photography Branding, Time Plan - OUGD603

This is a brief timeplan created based on estimated time to produce an finish each task throughout this project. The idea is to stick to these timeframes as best as I can but some things may be altered or extended depending on feedback and meet ups with the client. Things like client going to Berlin with a university trip as well a my own projects could alter estimated times .

I would like to finish the entire project by the end of march. The times given at the bottom are from when the brief was first started from the initial sit down meeting with the client. Each time frame is spaced out week by week, this is to make it easier to follow but also to try and make it easier to fit in meetings with the client.

Photography Branding, First Meeting - OUGD603

After my first meeting with Izzy we had chatted about what she would need in terms of her self branding. She stated that she would need a logo or icon for herself, business cards and possibly help creating a website and a small publication. In my opinion this is all doable and pretty much what I expected when accepting the task before the winter break.

We didn't go into specifics but I gained some insight into what Izzy is into as well looking through some of her work. This will help to get a brief idea of what Izzy's work is like and what she is like as a person to develop my ideas for her branding around her. As the weeks move on we will attempt to meet up frequently to maintain constant feedback as well as talking online.

Photography Branding, Brief - OUGD603

The Background:

Branding is a key part of design and helps to get your name out into the world. Personal branding packs are almost essential for creatives to have so they can showcase their work and network with potential clients.

The Problem:

Photography students need help with their branding to make sure they can show off their. They also need the designs to be clear and legible to make sure they have the best shot when handing out the packs.

The Brief:

Create a promotional pack for a photography student influenced by them as a creative, their personality and their work.

Target Audience:

  • Potential Clients
  • The Photographer
Considerations:

  • Their Interests
  • Their work
  • Branding
  • Photography Branding
  • Promotional Packs

KFC, Evaluation - OUGD603

The project was finished and submitted with all feedback and changes made before the allotted time. This means I was able to start other briefs sooner that previously thought. The original time plan was stretched out slightly longer than needed as print slots and photography studios may not have been available. I also left time for anything that needed to be adjusted after gaining feedback.

Overall this brief has been quite challenging as it was quite open but it felt quite closed. It was quite hard to get into designing at first with such a huge theme and with so much existing branding out there already for KFC. Once I had searched the word celebrate a few times the same things kept appearing, often Confetti was featured as a main part of each image. It made sense to create some simple shapes and have them exploding from the box itself to recreate this celebratory feel without being too overpowering. KFC has never had loud packaging or design in the past so it didn't make sense to start it now and instead stick with their theme of clean simple design. The colours eventually all fit together with existing products and made it easier to create mockups for other bits of branding. My time keeping this year has been better than any year previously and each project has usually taken less time than I have planned to finish. I still manage to wait up until the planned deadline for any feedback but with this project I not much adjustment was needed.
