Lady Livid, Development - OUGD603

Above is the final edit for the cover. To make the design the same photo was used of one hand and then flipped around to create the rectangular shape. The levels were changed to darken the blacks and lighten the whites to really make the design stand out. The designs were sent off to the client and feedback was also given in person after attending one of their gigs.

Both members of the band are excited for the design to be put into practice:

The shots worked really well for the design and the final outcome has come out better than anticipated. The accidental cracked look has gone down great with the client making the design really shout out at them. They did have some critical feedback for the images too. Below are some experiments using type, the client did not like any of these for their piece and although the final one uses the typeface used in their logo they thought it best not to be included. As for the piece below originally the design was slightly skewed but the client wanted it straightened up to match their logo more, they also wanted the hands to be moved again to help match but it didn't look right. After explaining why the design would not work the client thought it best to leave the design as the final above. The hands being moved made the L shapes into more of a square rather than a rectangle matching the logo.

Overall the design seems to be successful but it is still needed to be taken further. Mockups as well a printing will need to be done and sent over to maintain constant communication between the designer and the client.

Lady Livid, Feedback - OUGD603

(Louis - Client from Lady Livid)

After sending over the designs to the client they were pleased with the outcomes. I explained how some of the designs will be taken further and therefore will need more feedback on these. For now the designs are said to be working within the style of the band and within the guidelines stated in the brief. Experiments will be taken to explore all avenues but the plan is to carry on with this similar design.

Lady Livid, Photoshoot Outcomes - OUGD603

The plan was to keep the images all black and white and really make the black from the paint pop from the white background, this will also coincide with the bands style. This will make the design stand out and catch the eye of the viewer. Below is a collection of the final images to be used for editing. Some need to be taken further than this stage but first feedback is needed to carry on from both the client and peers.

Lady Livid, Photoshoot - OUGD603

The photoshoot went well the images came out as planned as well as some new ideas cropping up and bringing the shots to a new level. The designs now need to be edited as well as mocked up and sent over to the client to make sure that the outcomes are as they expected.

The shoot was not very time consuming and did not take long at all to set up or take down as I didn't have any equipment to book out. I provided the camera and the lights and table were already present in the studio. The lights were continuous with no flash and all shots were taken in raw format so that the lighting could be edited in post if needed.

To start shot were taken in the shapes without paint then small amounts were added. Prints were made onto the paper to get some textures that could be used in the design process. Then to get rid of the arms having to cross in strange directions shots were taken with only one hand in making the shot to then be doubled later on. When it came to cleaning up Courtney went to scratch the paint off her hands which gave a great grungy look and added some speckles to the paper. This effect had to be utilised so more shots were taken just before the final clear up.

Creative Networks, Blurb - OUGD603

The blurb about the artist/speaker along with the information was provided by the speakers via Elli from CN. Using the blurb was useful to entice the viewer and to provide some information on the speaker for those who were not in the know.

Creative Networks, Layout - OUGD603

To make sure the design stayed consistent with each event a layout had to be created, this would act as a guide. For the flyers the basic layout was mocked up and labeled. The flyer can be flipped to change up the design each event while still keeping a similar feel, as shown below.

Originally the LAU logo was left out of the design but later added in, some ideas were sent back and forth between myself and Elli from Creative Networks to decide on where best to place it. As for the rest of the rest of the layout each poster will be kept consistent. A large scale image will be printed on the poster with information about each speaker/event on a slightly transparent white box. This box will also contain the creative networks logo. In the end the LAU logo was decided to be placed in the bottom left corner, with the logo being able to be displayed in black and white and the other way round depending on the image behind.

Creative Networks, Reply - OUGD603

I received a reply from Elli (part of the careers team) explaining that they enjoyed my work and have offered me the position to create posters and flyers for the next year's future events.

It was pointed out that not much needed to be changed apart from using the correct type and correct logos for both LAU and Creative Networks. I had also copied and pasted a spelling mistake throughout which shows spell checking work is always needed.

The next event is two weeks away for ISG Productions and both the poster and flyer is needed for this event. As I stated in my email the loop can be changed for each event based on the artist so the colours can be changed. I have also been asked to create a black and white loop to be used as well.

Lady Livid, Photoshoot Preparation - OUGD603

A studio has been booked out in preparation for the photoshoot. A health and safety assessment form had to be filled out and verified by the staff in the studios. This was to show how the shoot would be set up in regards to using liquids near equipment and using materials on models that could be dangerous to their skin.

The model that has agreed to do the shoot is not allergic to any of the materials bought and is happy to help out and go ahead with the shoot. Courtney from my course has agreed to help out.

The materials needed have been bought from the university shop costing just under £5. For the shoot we will need paper to protect surfaces and create a white backdrop as well as black acrylic paint to stand out from the white and give different finishes throughout the shoot.

The plan is to take various shots of Courtney's hands creating the bands logo by making two L shapes which will create a sort of box or rectangle. The paint will be applied in varied amounts and the shots will be taken as quickly as possible to gain a shine from the paint before it dries then some shots will be taken to gain a matte effect.

Something to the effect of the quick mock up seen below:

Creative Networks, Submission - OUGD603

I sent off my designs to creative Networks and I am now awaiting a reply. Below is a copy of the email I sent. explaining the concept behind the brief.

I have attached a folder containing a poster design for Jake Chapman and a flyer for the same. The posters will be laid out in a similar manner bold and clear with a piece of the guests work or what they are known for pictured behind. The style can change throughout the year but will stay modern and clean to keep a familiar look to each making the information easier to make out. The flyers can use the same with the creative networks presents on the front.
I have also attached a flyer design that can be updated termly to show which events are upcoming in case that could be considered.

The MP4 is to be played on a loop, the colours can be changed according to the relevance of the guest and the name can be added in.

Any other queries or if the folder will not open please don't hesitate to email back.

Kind Regards

Joshua Storey

Creative Networks, Loop - OUGD603

This is the loop that was requested to be on repeat at the start of each talk. As I stated earlier the design would incorporate an art look so I made the animation look as if there were a sort of liquid or paint creating the logo. The colours used are that of the Creative Networks logo.

I had knowledge of after effects and how to create animation or gifs like the one above but I am not aware of all the tools available. The idea for the loop came to me almost instantly and I jotted the idea down so that I wouldn't forget it. The issue was that I did not know how to create the liquid or paint effect applied so I looked to a YouTube tutorial for help. This then meant I could create the idea above.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNxS1TZWQ4Y

Lady Livid, Research - OUGD603

From previous projects there is much research into musical genres and the styles that come with them. For this project there will need to be some research to gain inspiration from a rock and metal style of music. Gaining inspiration from existing pieces and projects is essential but some must also be taken from the band/client themselves.

Here are some images of the band playing live:

Their music style is quite raw grungy and loud, the design style must match this. Below are some images of bands in a similar genre or with similar design styles. The designs all varey from what is to be expected in the album to the bands trends. Some like the top image from the Arctic Monkeys is quite bold but simple. as we move further down colour is added and the designs become more complicated or intricate. The client stated that they would like a simple design not too intricate but more than just type alone. Ideas have already been thrown around on what could be featured and as the album has not yet been written the only songs to go off what could be expected are from EPs that have been released. This is still helpful as the client has stated the style will not differ too much from what is already out.

Lady Livid, Brief - OUGD603

The Background:

All bands need artwork that visualises their sound this can be through their branding, poster, merchandise or artwork. It is an important part of the identity for the band almost like their brand image.

The task:

Create album cover art for the band Lady Livid. The band has also requested a character design to go alongside their identity.

Target Audience:

  • 18-35 Year olds (Young Adults)
  • Fans of the band
  • Fans of rock/metal music genre
  • The client

Considerations:

All these must coincide with the bands current aesthetic and make it known to the public. The designed must reflect the bands views and ideas. Overall the project should stand out and help to get the bands name known and into the world.

Lady Livid - OUGD603

Lady Livid are a local band from Lancashire. Following on from creating their brand identity last year they have asked me to create their first album cover. I have already created some EP covers for them, designed around their specifications (see below).

For the new cover they want a more intrecate and in depth design. Jake the bands lead singer and guitarist suggested an idea using hands and printing the L shapes from their logo onto paper. This is a good starting point but will be pushed further. I also plan to create a character for the band using a pin up style. This will suit the bands aesthetic and their sound. The whole look needs to be representative of their current style and musical genre using a grungy rock inspiration.
